When reading this, please realize that this is for fully human OC’s in modern times only.

No more than six Pokemon on a battle team. Why can’t people realize this? Seriously, have you ever seen anyone battle with more than six Pokemon? No? Then why are their OC’s battling with 15 freakin Pokemon a piece? It’s perfectly fine for a gym leader or professor to have a bunch of Pokemon that live with them, or for a trainer to have a ton of stored Pokemon as long as they aren’t constantly using more than six.

Starters as starters never go out of style. There are way too many fics where the OC has Pikachu or Eevee as a starter for no reason. Try to use starters as starter Pokemon (don’t give the trainer a bunch of starters or starters from foreign regions). When a new Pokemon is released before its generation (this happened with Munchlax), and is not a starter Pokemon, don’t use it as a starter until the rest are released.

Your starter is not Pikachu. Not every starter likes/hates their trainer imminently. Give them personality.

Shiny Pokemon are done to death. So you wanna have a unique OC with a party of shiny’s? Well, tough luck. Shines are rare, not something that your OC can have a million of (I’ve seen people who have OC’s with a ton of shiny Pokemon, and will flame anyone with a single shiny). One is okay (as long as it’s a fairly common Pokemon), two is pushing it, and three or more makes your character a Mary-Sue. Shiny starters are also done to death (seriously, who would give a Pokemon that rare to a little kid?).

Nobody has multi-color hair. Have you ever seen anyone with rainbow hair in Pokemon? It’s perfectly okay to give your OC purple hair, but not rainbow.

Nobody has a perfect body. Your OC shouldn’t be tall, thin, and large busted (especially if they are 14 or younger), that would make them a Mary-Sue. Give them appearance flaw. Why not give your character small breasts, and have her feel awkward whenever a woman with bigger breasts walks by?

Cool it with the Eevee’s. Yes, Eevee is an epic Pokemon, but it is also done to death. Unless your OC is an Eevee breeder (and not a part time Pokemon master), than they shouldn’t have a million Eevee’s (especially not shiny ones). Don’t even get me started on Eevee as a starter.

Pokemon don’t speak English. I’m fine with you having OC’s raised by Pokemon who aren’t carbon copies of N (Try to have them more like the Kangaskong kid from season one where the parents accidentally lost him instead of it involving rape/abuse). But if your OC was raised by Pokemon and had little or no contact with humans, than they shouldn’t be able to speak perfect English the first minute they encounter a human.

Becoming a Pokemon master isn’t a walk in the park. I get it you wanna make your OC be really cool with a bunch of championship titles, or top coordinator titles, or the like, but if you give your OC too much power and titles, they become a Mary-Sue. Decide of you wanna make them a renowned breeder OR a master of flying types.

Legendary Pokemon are supposed to be rare. Your OC shouldn’t encounter a legendary on their first day out, nor should they posses more than one that is not one of a kind and necessary to keep the Earth in alignment (Dialgia, Yvetal, ect.). Don’t even get me started on shiny legendary Pokemon. Even if your OC has a legendary/rare Pokemon, they shouldn’t get it very easy (not without a Master ball, which you can only get one of), it should take a lot of time and effort. Legendary Pokemon are already so powerful, leaving no room for growth.

Clothing shouldn’t be too impractical. Yes, flip-flops look cute, but they shouldn’t be worn on Mt. Silver. Your OC’s clothing should work for where they are/live. It’s perfectly fine to have impractical outfits that backfire for humorous effects (i. e. Getting sick after wearing a tanktop and shorts around Snowpoint city).

OC’s are not your shipping toys. Your OC shouldn’t exist so you can ship them with characters that you think are hot (N and Gary are big ones, but for me it was Falkner). Your OC should not be constantly hit on by character (especially not significantly older characters), or used as an object of desire of any kind (It’s really sexist to have your female character simply be a sex doll). Please don’t ship your OC with Pokemon, just don’t.

Pokemon don’t get stronger because you want them to. Let’s take Tallow for example (apparently someone was god-moding with one of these), it’s got horrible attack stat until it evolves. Now let’s say you pit it against a Chancy (very high HP). Your Tallow shouldn’t be able to take down the Chancy in one it. And forget about the whole, “Dodge every attack” thing. Look up stats are be reasonable.

Ash does not have a twin sister. It’s okay to have your OC be related to cannon characters, but don’t make it a relationship that couldn’t happen, and try to stick to less popular characters.

Get your evolution facts straight. Eevee doesn’t evolve by the moon stone, Porygon doesn’t evolve by leveling up. Get your facts straight, and make sure you use a reliable site for information.

Pokemon should be caught/befriended in different ways. You don’t even wanna know how many fic there are where all the Pokemon were nursed back to health by the OC who they then join. It’s okay to do this once or twice, but not all the time. Give each Pokemon their own method of capture.

Your OC is not Ash. Don’t have their journey be just like Ash’s, you know what I mean (waking up late, getting a rare starter that hates them, ect.) Give them their own journey.

Prophecies involving an OC as the “Chosen one” are dead. Your character is not some special half-Arseus, god. If you must put in a prophecy, make it less about your OC and more about others.

Rare Pokemon are supposed to be rare. Your OC should not be given a rare Pokemon as a starter because the professor “doesn’t need it” for some reason (“Here, take this shiny Eevee, I have no use for it.”), or find one on their first day out (“OMG, I’ve only been out here for three minutes, and I just found a shiny Dragtini.”). If your OC must of a rare Pokemon, have it take a lot of searching to get that one rare Pokemon (don’t have them find a ton of rare Pokemon).

Too many outfits, is too much baggage. Pokemon trainers are constantly traveling around, so they wouldn’t have room for a million outfits. Its okay for them to have outfits for different function (Swimsuit, coat, ect.), or for a stationary character to have a bunch of clothing. Try carrying a bag around with a bunch of different outfits (including shoes). Now put other things such as food in that bag. My point exactly.

Too much angst makes a Mary-Sue. Trauma is a good way to make people feel bad for your character, right? Wrong! Angst should never be used to make people feel bad for your character. Try not to use too much angst, and make sure it fits with the setting. And skip the whole, “Dad? What dad?” thing (I can name four characters off the top of my head with daddy issues).

Straw men are not suitable villains. Jessie and James are weak and stupid, but that’s not the entire team rocket. Your OC should have to fight strong villains which take a long time to defeat (fighting straw men and paper tigers makes them look weak).

Preteens aren’t THAT mature. This includes both physical and mental attributes. A ten year old shouldn’t be a D-cup, nor should they be able to process everything that is happening around them as well as an older person would.

There are no set gender roles. Just because your OC is a boy doesn’t mean he has to do gym, just because your trainer is a girl doesn’t mean she has to be a coordinator. Anyone who says differently is a sexist pig.

Just because its fanFICTION, doesn’t mean you don’t have to keep the cannon. No explanation necessary.

Use spell check. Your fic isn’t SOOOO good that everyone will ignore that you wrote in text format. Also, google translate shall not be used to translate fics.

Learn to take criticism. You are not the greatest writer ever; people have the right to give you helpful tips on your writing. Before you say to them, “You have no right to criticize my art.” Remember, you posted in a public space, and didn’t disable reviews. Never say, “I worked really hard on this, so please like it.”

Have fun. Duh.

Just some tips for creating Pokemon OC's

What about if the trainers starter is a legendary because of a backstory about being in danger. And obviously the legendary would have to be maybe a newborn so it's pretty much as weak as any starter Pokemon. And the trainer sees legendary Pokemon on it's journey but does not catch anymore. I've really wanted to write a trainer with a Shaymin for a long time and it would make more sense than any other legendary because there's lots of them.

My Pokemon OC was based on my gameplay of Pokemon Sun. Therefore, because I got a (no joke) LEVEL 100 SHINY MIMIKYU from a kind stranger on the internet very late in the game (around the Lusamine battle in Ultra Space), my OC has a shiny Mimikyu. Is that okay, because it’s based on real life, or should I halve the level so it’s not too over powered?

I would say it's fine as long as it isn't too OP

wants to give tips (which should be treated like an opinion and not tips sent by the gods themselves which you can absolutely not disagree with like they're the obvious truth)

cant even spell arceus

"too much angst makes a mary sue" "dont make them like this" "dont make them do that" "hAve FUN!!1!1!1q!1!!!qq" well okay

honestly you should just do what you want. if your trainer's a nihilist and a punky rebel and wants to have more than 6 pokémons then go

"don't make them have rainbow hair" ??? excuse me what?? why shouldnt people give them rainbow hair if it fits the character?? just because you've never seen it in canon doesn't mean it's bad. i can't remember ever seeing, for example, any gay characters but that doesn't make it bad to have one.

i agree on the "learn to take criticism" but sometimes even the criticism in itself isn't that good so i'd say "think about the criticism and if you want to apply it partly, entirely or not"

Thank you for this info. Although I need comments on my OC. Somehow it's good to have someone to realize or give ideas on making small changes to my OC. hehe

I’m guilty of giving my OC two decently uncommon shinies... BUT LET ME EXPLAIN! The first one was entirely on accident, and he felt kind of accomplished for it, so taken back that he couldn’t even think, the second one was to impress a girl he liked “If I have one shiny, imagine what she’ll think if I have TWO shinies!” And after searching and searching for days and days and days, he finally finds one and has a pretty damn hard time trying to capture it in the first place, and even after all that, the whole experience left him physically and emotionally drained, and the girl he likes felt more pitiful for him than impressed.

Also nothing to do with nothing, but he’s not really super important to my stories... just saying...

What if your OC is older than standard when they first start their journey? Does this also have to apply for other regions than Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn? For instance, my OC is 14 and starts her journey at that age.

is nihilego and other UBs okay? I read that they are just as common in ultra space as a rattata, and just live under harsher conditions.

Is it alright if your OC sees a Legendary Pokemon on their first day, But doesn't capture it?
Thanks for the advice by the way!

Which legendary?

As in Any Legendary. Like, Lugia, Ho-oh, Moltres, etc.

All those would be fine, but certain legendaries like Jirachi only apear on certain days.

If you're still rating OC's, I'd like to offer mine up:

Lux, 20, Pokémon Travel Guide writer

Background: Lux was born in Dendemille Town, northeast of Lumiose City in Kalos. She has a single mother, an older sister and a younger sister. Her older sister is a fairly well-known PokéStylist who travels to take part in competitions. Inspired by the souvenirs and pictures her sister sent home, Lux began exploring the Kalos when she caught her first Pokémon at ten, Fletchling. By the time she was twelve, she had published a travel guide of the region (which was mostly only bought and read by supportive family and neighbors). After this, she left for Kanto, her first stop on seeing what the rest of the world had to offer.

For the next five years, Lux traveled through the other regions, spending a year surveying each one. For every region, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova, she published a tour guide and with each release, her series became more well-known and the ones written before became retroactively popular. With a tidy sum of money from royalties built up, she returned at eighteen to Kalos, getting an apartment in Lumiose City and starting up a travel agency with her friend from the Sinnoh region, Shula (another OC). In the meanwhile, she also released a revamped Kalos Tour Guide.

Two years later, Lux is now leaving FireLight Travel Agency in her business partner's capable hands to explore the Alola region, for what is projected to be the hottest installment in her tour guide series.

(F) Talonflame - Caught as Fletchling at the park near Lux's house when she was 10. In many ways, Talonflame is as much her business partner as Shula. With a specially fitted harness equipped with a camera, Talonflame takes stunning long-shot pictures that fill the readers of Lux's tour guides with wanderlust.

(M) Aegislash - Gifted as Honedge when Lux was 12 by her visiting older sister. Aegislash is Lux's primary battling Pokémon.

(M) Tentacruel - Caught as Tentacool in Kanto when Lux was 13. She had specifically set about catching a useful, water-type Pokémon to offset her ineptitude in the water herself, but was very put off by Tentacool, who latched himself to her. They've grown to be incredibly close, however.

(F) Glaceon - Glaceon was traded to her by Shula in Sinnoh when Lux was 16. Lux had caught a Vibrava in Hoenn a year earlier whose competitive nature found it frustrated and unfufilled with a tour guide writer less interested in battling than exploring. Shula was an all-around better fit for Vibrava and she had an unforthcoming Glaceon who it was agreed would be more suited to Lux, so the trade was made.

(F) Zorua - Caught around the outskirts of Castelia City in Unova when Lux was 17. She realized the Pokémon was stalking her, or her camera to be more precise, when she saw it had shown up in all the pictures she had taken that day. Zorua seemed fascinated by her equipment and was very willing to be caught. She is by far Lux's least camera shy Pokémon. She has not evolved yet.

(M) Jangmo-o - Jangmo-o persistently trails Lux and her Pokémon through Vast Poni Canyon after the happen upon him training and take pictures. He tries to incite them to battle so he can test his strength against them, despite their repeated deflections. After finally getting the battle he wanted and losing, he continues to tail them until Lux gets the hint and brings him into her team.

Lux is very close to her Pokémon. They are her team and her family, the few consistent things in the ever-changing landscape of her life. She bonds with them more through a shared love of their work and their travels than through taking on other Pokémon, though she can appreciate a good battle now and then. Her team is strong enough to hold it's own when necessary, which has been enough to get them out of a few rough spots on their escapades in the past, but being strong for the sake of it has never been her priority.

Personality: Adventurous, inquisitive, and passionate. Lux can shift between playful sarcasm and downright goofiness with her friends and Pokémon. She's pretty bold, stemming from the fact that she knows who she is and where she's going in life big-picture-wise, even if she doesn't know exactly where her next journey will take her. This leads her to being overall happy and optimistic. She lives for the thrill of discovery and the companionship of the people and Pokémon she cares about.

Appearance: Silver hair (undercut), gold eyes, fair skin. Multiple ear piercings, various gold rings, sleeve tattoo, burgundy nail polish. Black leggings and an oversized white blouse with the sleeves partly rolled up never go out of style. Black boots with treads for practicality. Black backpack (lots of sunscreen-running gag), work-in-progress keychain collection featuring Pokémon on her team.

Hello there,
I have just finished making my first Pokemon OC and I just want to let you know that my OC is going to have carry more than six Pokemon. You see, my OC is also a crossover of Pokemon and Fire Emblem. I haven't name my OC yet...She's from Kalos region and one day she is being sucked by a portal that leads to the Fire Emblem universe. It will be Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Anyways, she traveled from Kalos, Hoenn, Johto, Sinnoh, Unova, and Alola region. Her goal is to beat every Pokemon League in each region. Its true that you have to carry six Pokemon for a Pokemon journey, but she did it for safety measures. Which is being sucked by a portal. To elaborate, she is on her way to Kanto when a unusual storm appeared. She volunteer to check it out but then she felt a force pulling her in and transport her and her team to Valentia.

But if it said no more than six than I guess I can do that.

Sorry, I rambled on for a bit (read: for a LONG WHILE) below! But yeah, this is super helpful and I'll keep it in mind when creating background characters and rivals!

My main OC's story is called Fight and Flight, which I guess gives you a pretty good concept of the main themes (namely: she's scared of birds). She takes the place of the X/Y protagonist, but her journey is a bit more of a mix between manga, games, anime and my personal world building.

Her full name is Echola Serena Cation-Timone; but it's commonly shortened to Echola Timone.

Anyways, the only things I think my OC offends on this list are...

- Your OC shouldn’t exist so you can ship them with characters that you think are hot. "N and Gary are big ones, but for me it was Falkner." This doesn't even count, but honourable mentions because I am downright cackling at this line
Echola's older brother
is Falkner.

There's a story behind this. When I first created Echola, I was replaying SS. I absolutely love Johto- the music's nice, the colours work well, and they fixed the problems from D/P/Pt. So, Echola's story is set in Kalos bc X/Y were BIG in 2013 (duh). My first concept for her was blue eyes and raven-dark hair. Basically, edgy 13yo me was all "it's a very very very very very dark blue". This also fits in with ye olde "can't-draw-the-other-eye" phase.
I eventually gave up with the dark blue/black and was all "her hair's bright blue"
Blue hair that covers half the face. Johto origin. Also, I had a soft spot for Violet City. You can see where this is going.
I didn't.
The ending of this story is kind of obvious. The explanation for the hair is that she idolises her brother and wants to be a Gym Leader like him. I honestly have no excuse for the rest of it.

Well anyway, I ship her with another OC of mine- Summer Winters (yes, everyone has dumb names in my fic), so we're cool here.

- Pokemon should be caught/befriended in different ways. We have the classic starter given x2 (chespin and charmander), the capture (absol), the egg hatching (noibat), the inherited (skarmory), plus an injured and treated (skiddo, who was released after returning to full health) and an abandoned pokemon (klefki, also released back to a group of wild ones). I think I do pretty well on this front :P

- Too much angst makes a Mary-Sue. Sorry, back at it again with the daddy issues... I mean.... where even is Falkner's dad? Somewhere running in another region? idk. Don't get me wrong, Echola knows who her dad is (Wayne, his Pokemon Adventures appearance) buuuuut considering who he is and all, he's not around much...
Echola moves to Kalos with her mother, Falkner's still in Johto with the gym, and Wayne is god knows where. He's the one that gives her the skarmory, so she does see him like... every few months? Her parents are basically through a divorce so I suppose this is all justified.

Ehhh whatever, this is just me throwing words on a page to see what sticks.

Great list. Doesn't really apply to me since I write for Ash himself, but from what I've seen over the years, a lot of people could stand to learn from this.
MaddiKittenXIV Featured By Owner Feb 23, 2017  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I'm thinking of an elaborate situation for her to come in contact with Hoopa. She hears rumor of a large Pokemon near the town where the weapon used to be. (ps Ash doesn't exist in this AU BUT she's not Ash either. She comes from Sinnoh and picks Chimchar as a stater) It's been 10 years since she became a trainer when she was 11. She wasn't able to make it to get her starter when she was 10 so she was forced to wait another year before getting her starter, anywho!

(-) Hoopa (Unbound) - Mahad
Hyperspace Fury
Drain Punch
Gunk Shot
It was 10 years after Madison had finally made it across the different regions before making it to her finally destination, Kalos. She traveled the region and took quite some time to fight the Gyms and beat the Pokemon league. After having been in Kalos for nearly a year, she hears rumors of a Pokemon in the ruins where the tombstones of the fallen Pokemon were kept. The Hoopa is in its bound form and hovers near the tomb of a fallen friend, a Rhyperior, and for the first week, it's very scared and flees from her to another dimension if she's even spotted by it. During the second week, it learns she poses no threat but prefers she not come near it before she gains its trust slowly over the course of another week by leaving it food and being seen placing offerings on the Rhyperior's grave. It comes to realize she's mostly harmless and a kind person. Finally, after the third week, Hoopa cautiously approaches her when she holds out a sweet poffin before taking the pastry and eats it. With enjoyment, it smiles at her after seeing her smile before floating around her head and giggles while it tries to be more open with her yet doesn't think it's time to talk to her just yet. Each time it'd return to her at the tombstone they'd place offerings for the Rhyperior and after several weeks they become good friends.

When Lysandre begins to use the weapon again, she and Hoopa along with other trainers comes to try and stop the weapon as many feared it would destroy life on earth while Hoopa feared of the gravestones being ruined by the energy from the blast. Hoopa takes her to a cave by the shore where he lives in order for her to see the lamp in which she had to have the correct motive for it to allow anyone to touch it or take it from the prison it rested in of magical energy. She is tested by the security system and the lamp itself allowing her to believe she could take the lamp but instead blocks her out and forces her to test herself. She forces her hands into the magical protection which burns her hands and causes her distress in which Hoopa felt worried but in his desperation to save his fallen friend he pulls on her to help her finally break the lamp free of its prison. She takes Hoopa to the site of the weapon and releases Hoopa's true form in which she instructs Hoopa to destroy the weapon. It finally speaks revealing his masculine voice and signature move "Hyperspace Fury" which breaks the weapon causing it to release a beam of energy before it spirals down from space and destroys the weapon itself and kills Lysandre inside. She was guarded along with other trainers by Hoopa's Unbound form in which it protects them before forcing the trainers into a portal to a safe distance leaving Hoopa to be struck by the explosion and thrown onto its back. When the smoke clears, she rushes to find Hoopa and comes across its bruised, scratched, and slightly burned body. It groans and looks at her telling her, "Thank you, now I can finally rest along with my friend.". She begs him to wait for her while she quickly runs to the Pokemon center to retrieve her Chansey before bringing her back and allows Chansey to use Softboiled on Hoopa and helps it eat the egg which gives it enough strength to remain conscious for a while longer. Due to internal damage, it wasn't long before it would faint and possibly die from the extreme damage taken.

When it awoke the next day, she named him, "Mahad" which meant "One who is Great" in a foreign language. After its full recovery, she returned it to its fallen friend's resting place and said she would let it back into the wild before it refused and said it knew she needed him by the tone in her voice. It remained with her as long as she agreed to return to Kalos to let it revisit its friend once a year. She agreed and the two became trusted partners who have remained very close since the day she saved it.

I hope this is a good enough reason?

Making a female character a sex doll shouldn't be considered sexist by anyone. You know why? BECAUSE THAT CHARACTER ISN'T A REPRESENTATION OF ALL WOMEN. There are probably actual people out there who were turned into live sex dolls. Is their existence sexist now? Nope. They just have a fucked up life. wHOOP WHOOP

While you do make a good point about starters, you can't find starters in the wild in the games, and can be considered rare, so not everyone will have them. I gave one of my ocs a cutiefly because she is a bug user, and the other one a bonsweet because she does contests and I wanted to give her feminine pokemon.

Hey so, I've been brainstorming since last night and sort of thought some characters up and i really like them, would you maybe go over one of them for me?

My character I've worked the most on is Frances Wood.  She's fourteen, almost fifteen and little more than halfway through her journey (i didn't want to write an 11 yr old character cause I'm not so good at writing for that yet, so i made her sort of around my age).  Her team at their final evolutions (i haven't finished researching yet) are Camerupt, Seaking, Sceptile (her starter--she's from the Hoenn region), Beautifly, Kadabra, and Salamance.  She always always always has her Dowsing Machine on, thus giving her her widely used nickname "Bug."  I'm thinking of making it so anyone who reads her once i get writing/drawing doesn't actually know her real name until later in the story (a dumb cliche, I know, but still kind of fun).  Because she always has her dowsing machine on, she carries around a huge bag filled to the brim with things she finds.  This gets quite heavy as they travel and she often complains, but she refuses to give up anything she finds, even if she doesn't have a use for it.
She carries her Pokeballs on a belt, and wears a white sleeveless shirt, worn jeans (she didn't buy them that way, stuff happens when you only have one pair of jeans) and sturdy boots.  She has brownish eyes and light brown hair in low pigtails. When it's cold, she wears a long, fleecy, multicolored coat that is normally pinned to the inside bottom of her bag for makeshift lining (the original lining is toast by now, she has so much crap with her).  She also occasionally wears a scarf over her hair, with holes cut for the antenna of her dowsing machine.
She loves all the colors of the rainbow but isn't much of a shopper, thus her plain clothes but really cool jacket.  All the colors, one shopping trip.
She's a pretty happy character (though i wouldn't describe her at all as bubbly) but also very driven--she couldn't be on any sort of journey if she wasn't driven.
I haven't decided what sort of things upset her yet, but i suppose I'll get there.
Her life starts sort of how the game starts--she's living with her mother and father in Littleroot.  She has a brother about 3 years younger than her who loves to scavenger hunt--she often accompanies him.  She meets her companions, Colin Fish and George Candle (the other characters I thought up) in the next couple towns over.
She loves Moomoo Milk, hates Lemonade (too sour for her), and is obsessed with any and all kinds of Soda Pop.  She drinks it more than her pokemon do.
She's a relatively skilled battler for her point in the journey, but is weak to any sort of big distractions and gets confused or hesitant with weather changes--she loses confidence because the affect of her Pokemon's moves could change.
I haven't researched enough about her Pokemon to figure out where or when she catches them, but depending on where each is found i'll want her to catch them pretty early on.  I imagine she has a very strong bond with each of her Pokemon.

you don't have to look this over if you don't feel like it, but i thought it'd be useful to get an opinion.  thanks either way <3

It looks pretty good so far, I like the dowsing machine idea. As for all the evolved Pokemon, try not to have them all evolve at once, or make them slightly weaker because she used Rare candies she found so they don't have the greatest EVs.

i definitely wouldn't have them all evolve at one time.  i still gotta look at what level each one evolves at and whatnot.  I've never actually had a main team with any of the pokemon she uses tbh. whoops.  I'm glad you like the dowsing machine idea though!  i wasn't sure if itd be too weird.  thanks for the feedback!

I'm not trying to go against you but I caught a Solgaleo on the first try with a quick ball, no health down, no status conditions.

Duh every one catches that its cuz your supposed to catch it i caught it wit ha pokeberry first time.

I am not hating on you but I must tell you that how the games work is different from how the canon poke world works especially since you are the protagonist of the game. Think of it like the real world, if you perhaps have encountered a big grizzly bear can you catch it with a common net in just the first try? The chances are no because they are very fierce creatures.

Btw I caught Lunala in a moon ball in the first try without even battling it. Why? Because in the games, catching Solgaleo/Lunala or Xerneas/Yveltal were required so the catch rates were very low and that is why it is not a surprise you caught your Solgaleo with a quick ball from the start.

I wasn't even bothered to try so i just used the master ball to catch Lunala, but I caught Xerneas in pokemon X using the master ball, but later on i ran into the mewtwo, big mistake
Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Dec 31, 2016  Hobbyist Writer
I did the same exact thing. Also caught Xerneas that way.

I like these, though I take issue with two of these; specifically "Have you ever seen anyone with rainbow hair in Pokémon?" ...Ummm, Alder, Mirror B., Colress, and Pokémon Ranger Ben say hi.
And this: "
Too many outfits, is too much baggage." As much as I hate authors going overboard with clothes descriptions like they're trying to sell it or something, infinite character customization says hi. Plus, you can carry a bike, 99 potions, and 99 Pokéballs in the same bag with room to spare. I don't think hammerspace should be that big a deal.
Also, for unique starters, aren't the normal starters rare? What if the starter is a rather obscure or really common Pokémon? I'd seen someone on a forum say they're writing a fic in which the protagonist gets a Paras as a starter. Say, if a character gets a Rattata, Bidoof, Yungoos, Caterpie, Fletchling, Grubbin, etc., as their starter, is that an exception?
Though THANK YOU for mentioning that thing about preteens. Heck, even the writers themselves, of both game and show, seem to forget this at times. This is one of the issues I have with Pokémon Adventures too; while it is possible that humans in the Pokémon world mature slightly earlier, one should still make these children act like children. Everybody in that manga acts like they're three years older or more.
Btw, I don't really have any trainer OCs, but I do like to think of personalities for the player characters. I guess that makes them bypass many of these by default though; even Red gets a standard Bulbasaur instead of Pikachu as his starter. I take care in thinking up of personalities for their Pokémon too, and it's pretty fun. I also try hard to make it so that these trainers act at least somewhat their age; it can be pretty fun trying to think from the perspective of a kid, and I wish more people would write from this perspective instead of using yet another teenager. And I try to make the core series protagonists relatively innocent, normally bought up children, too, and heck, their innocence would play a role in most of their development. Of course the older heroes aren't as innocent, but I go nowhere near child abuse with the exception of Wes, who was abandoned. I even find I unintentionally avoid blatant abuse where people usually put it. Though that isn't to say no hero outside of Orre has had a completely peachy life, the vast majority of them have had happy lives. I try to make things as Game-accurate as possible, including with stats. While Red's Pikachu is a bit tough to deal with in this case I'm thinking of making him a para-haxer to slow everyone down as well as one of two sweepers who takes advantage of G1's crit mechanics (the other being a Fearow).

Sorry if I'm coming off as braggy, but I want to know if there are any tips on ways to write characters like this, especially since what the protagonists do can come off as sue-ish. Another good tip I think is remembering that Pokémon are animals; I'm trying to think if I could make them act like intelligent animals, but not 100% human. Species would probably have their own cultures, different ways of seeing things, and the like. E.g., I imagine that Meowstic gender roles are essentially reverse that of human ones, and Dawn's Lopunny, a particulary battle-happy and fiery member of his species, may have been disowned by his warren due to being seen as a danger to them right before Dawn encountered him as a Buneary.

Hi! I'm not sure if anyone asked you this yet, but have you heard of or read the Pokemon Adventure Manga? Because in the Manga the characters have two starters. What I mean is one is a common pokemon (ex: Poliwril, Poocheyena, etc.) And then the main starter to the game. Is that alright?
Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Dec 25, 2016  Hobbyist Writer
I think I've read it. Also, a lot of OC's do receive a common pokemon from their parents along with their starter. Its perfectly fine as long as the pokemon is weak, relativly common, and not shiny.
DreamNotePrincess Featured By Owner Dec 25, 2016  Student Writer
Ah okay! And two more questions if that's alright.

One, could an OC have a Ash Ketchem Route, like travels to different regions and take on their gyms, or island challenge (Since Pokemon Sun and Moon is out)?

And two, how do you think of a personality for your OC. I have trouble with coming up with personalities for my characters.
Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Dec 27, 2016  Hobbyist Writer
1. Well, yeah. As long as they're not a champion or something and you don't make them too similar to Ash, it is perfectly fine.

2. I try thinking of them as real people. Real people have interests, hobbies and fears. If you're really stuck, try a character question sheet. It can really help you figure out what type of people your characters are.

Okay thank you ^^

Would an Eveelution be okay? I have an OC and she's mainly ghost and pyscic types, so she has an Espeon, but it not the main one she uses; Decidueye is
Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Dec 20, 2016  Hobbyist Writer
One is okay, but not anymore than that and not as a starter. The only exception to the rule would be a trainer/breeder who has eeveelutions and only eeveelutions.
VocaloidFan16 Featured By Owner Dec 20, 2016  Student Traditional Artist
Oh, okay thank you! Yeah, Ever isn't her starter, Rowlet is!

Hey can you rate this character, I am writing a story for sun and moon WITHOUT the Mcs and without the main story plotpoints, so it'll be a different adventure in Alola (I used a template from someone on Deviantart so if this looks familiar then that's why)
Name: Emmi

Age: 12

Height: 5’4

Weight: 93.7 lbs.

Hair Color: Blonde

Eye color: Hazel

red spinirak tee: It’s basically just a Hawaiian loose tee with Spiniraks coming out of blue flowers; nothing much or less

masquerain Jersey: A cyan jersey with a Masquerain on the front using it’s wings as one half of the 00 behind (MORE COMING)

Accessories: A sewaddle pin, Whirlipede necklace,

Birthplace: Unova

Current location: Alola

Occupation: Currently Trainer; Desires to be professional bug catcher

Affiliations: Brother (Sean), Father (Daniel) Mother (Lillian)

Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Likes: Bug Types, Progress, Sour foods,

Neutrals: Cute things, Fairy types

Dislikes: Slowness, Grass types, Sweet things, snobs and fancies (Something like Parfum Palace not a resort)

Fears: Fighting Types, Tall ass things

Berserk buttons: Slow waiting, Tall things (She is short and favors that), purple

Emmi is a fast paced and Impatient trainer who can’t let herself be patient and wait around during regular times at home. She will try to have a conversation with you but please have topics to bring up or she will walk away to the next thing she finds. She prefers Sour foods VERY much over sweets, and can get confused if someone doesn’t feel the same.

Back in Unova where Triple and Rotation battles occurred, they spurred up everywhere all over the region, leaving not much room for the regular single/Double battles that she watched frequently as a kid. The amount it time it took to finish the former two eventually and how much was going on in the hustling and bustling cities made her more of someone to get things finished quickly. Another influence is the region’s spring of bug types around (Sewaddle, Scolipide, etc.) and how they interested her with no fear as she hung around them a lot. Her dislike of grass types is from the many weaknesses grass contains including bug and how boring they really are to her, but it for some reason makes her like bugs more.

Battle strategy: Gotta go fest 2fest4me quick kill (Translation: As you would expect she is a more sweeper person who would prefer much faster battling and quicker Kos, but having defense is also nice)

Pokémon #1:

Name: ******

Species: ******

Gender: Male

Personality: (Keywords or descriptions. Whatever you want!)

Character theme: (DPPT Bug Catcher theme for now)

It's still a W.I.P but if you see this I thank you very much especially if you have critiques

Animedemon001 Featured By Owner Dec 19, 2016  Hobbyist Writer
I think a bug catcher is a really good idea for a character. Bug catcher OC's are uncommon (and a bit underrated), and since bug types aren't as powerful as some other types, its a little harder to make an overpowered team. I think the awkward bug girl personality really fits the bug catcher theme.

I really like the spinirack tee, too.
