Due to the fact that Ouran is one of the first anime’s that people usually really get into, and thus, it has many bad OC’s. This guide will help you craft better OC’s who fit in with the fandom better.

You don’t need 200 adjectives to explain how beautiful our OC is. Instead of just giving a five paragraph introduction describing how your OC looks, spread it out (i.e. She ran her fingers through her long, brown hair). Nobody’s gonna read that.

There are no vampires in Ouran. Just putting this out there. Ouran is a show about a poor girl among the rich. There are no Vampires, no Neko’s, no anything besides human. It just doesn’t work with the canon.

Everyone has to wear an Ouran uniform. Girls also have to wear the female uniform. Its understandable that they'd hate their uniform, but its not like they could do anything about it. Haruhi was exempt from this rule because she couldn't afford a uniform originally, and when she got one, everyone thought she was a guy.

Does your OC really need to be in the Host club? Host club OC’s are really becoming over done. Your OC does NOT have to be friends with the cool kids to be interesting. Maybe they could be a member of the Black Magic club, or the Drama club, or possibly even a student at Lobelia.

Balance is key. A lot of people say that OC’s with a lot of flaws aren’t Mary-Sues, but if you give them too many flaws, they become an entirely different type of Sue. For every good quality you give your OC, give them 1.5 bad ones (round up).

The long-lost sibling thing is overdone. It’s perfectly fine for your OC to be related to canon characters, as long as it’s not too closely and makes sense, but don’t go overboard.

A girl wouldn’t be allowed to join the Host club. I get that a female OC could be a client of the Host club, or join in a gender swapped AU, but the Host club was formed to please young women. A female member could not do this. Oh, but what about Haruhi? Everyone thought that she was a boy (in fact all their clients still do). Nobody thinks your OC with double D’s is male (plus, that would just be copying a canon character).

Why work if you can pay something off in two seconds? Again with the making your OC too much like Haruhi thing. An OC goes into the Host club room looking for something else, breaks a vase, then starts working as a Host to pay it off. The illogical thing? They could just write a check and be done with it all.

Ouran scholarships aren’t given out like candy. This isn’t the biggest cliché I’ve seen, but it’s still worth mentioning. You have to be at the top of your class at Ouran in order to keep your scholarship, there’s an entire chapter in the manga about this. In the anime + the first books of the manga, Haruhi is at the top of the first year class, Tamaki and Ayame are and neck and neck for the top of the second year class, that only leaves the third year class open for a scholarship student. A poor character probably wouldn’t be at Ouran.

The Host club has their pick of the litter. The Host club members are some of the most popular guys in the entire school, so why would they pick your OC? Perhaps you could pair your OC with a less popular character such as Yasuchika or Nekozawa.

If you’re gonna ship your OC with a male Host, keep Haruhi in. A lot of fics exist where Haruhi is never around. This gives the OC more face time with the males. If you must keep Haruhi away, actually give a good reason (such as Haruhi was out sick that day).

Can’t an OC just be Japanese for once? Way too many OC’s are exchange students, and it’s becoming cliché. I can find two things wrong with most of these. For one, Ouran is not a boarding school, so where would the OC stay? Also, many OC’s from different countries can speak Japanese perfectly. It can take up to nine years for people who were born in Japan to learn it.

Ouran is not a very angsty show. Yes, Haruhi lost her mother. But she doesn’t angst about it all the time. Plus, that was the only incident. A lot of Ouran OC’s have a million angsty things happen, and they always talk about it and always get comforted. Keep angst minimal in Ouran.

Not everyone gets along. Give your OC both friends and enemies. This will make them more human and seem more real.

Arranged marriage died a century ago. Far too many fics exist where an OC is forced to marry Tamaki. For one, this wouldn’t happen these days. Tamaki’s dad also wouldn’t throw him into this, and the main family disowns him, so why bother? The only families who would de this are the more traditional families, such as the Haninozuka’s or the Nekozawa’s.

It is not common knowledge that Haruhi is a girl. This also goes for the “which one is Hikaru” game.  I get it that your OC could walk in when Haruhi is getting changed, and find out she’s a girl that way, but your OC shouldn’t just look at Haruhi once and be all, “Hey, you’re a girl!” The same goes with the twins. Very few people can win the, “Which one is Hikaru” game, and winning it by chance is perfectly fine, but your OC shouldn’t have clear evidence of which ones Hikaru after knowing the twins for a week.

Learn to take criticism. If you go in expecting great reviews, people are gonna have a field day. Criticism is mean to help you. Use it to your benefit.

My oc is male, South African/Swahili, and homeschooled. He lives in Japan and is a friend of Haruhi's (they are neighbors). He is taking an introduction to Japanese course. His father owns a small company, so I'd say he's middle class, although he could care less about money or social status. His name is Jabali Strauss. He met the Host Club one day because Haruhi didn't want to be forced out alone, and he developed crushes on Mori and Hikaru. (Strange, because he thinks he may be aromantic/asexual.)
